phi
is the first design system for the world of data analytics and AI.
phi-intro
Why is Phi unique?
Most design systems are used for designing internet and mobile apps. Fractal as an AI company, needs a design system specifically for designing data analytics and AI solutions using PowerBi, HTML, Tableau and Figma.
Who uses Phi?
Phi Design system is used by 4000 employees within Fractal.
Phi is not just used by our designers.

Phi Design system is created to democratize design across a company of 4000 data consuslts. Phi is not just used by our designers. It is used by our data consultants, scientists and engineers too.
Why did we call our design system 'Phi'?
Phi is the symbol for golden ratio - used in our design system to make things visually pleasing.
Phi is also an irrational number - metaphorically represents our irrational nature to make decisions.

Getting your Design System Right, Forrester Report, 2020
Before creating a design system, Fractal's behavioral science and design team embedded itself in projects to learn the challenges of applying design practices in an analytics and data science context. The Phi design system's UX Library are accessible in Figma and also in tools that data analysts and business analysts use, such as Power BI. The team knew that UX libraries don't matter much if the inputs to the design process are flawed. This led to creating a “user research toolkit” as part of the design system, which gives non-designers tools — akin to IDEO's Design Kit but for the analytical world — to better understand users and clients first.
